CloudFront HTTPS Only

cloudfront-https-only

What this rule checks

Detects CloudFront distributions allowing HTTP traffic.

How to fix it

  1. 1Set ViewerProtocolPolicy to https-only or redirect-to-https
  2. 2Configure custom SSL certificate
FlaggedALLOW_ALL lets viewers connect over plain HTTP, exposing requests and responses to interception.
import { aws_cloudfront as cloudfront, aws_cloudfront_origins as origins } from 'aws-cdk-lib';

new cloudfront.Distribution(this, 'Dist', {
  defaultBehavior: {
    origin: new origins.HttpOrigin('example.com'),
    viewerProtocolPolicy: cloudfront.ViewerProtocolPolicy.ALLOW_ALL,
  },
});
FixedREDIRECT_TO_HTTPS forces all viewer traffic onto encrypted HTTPS connections.
import { aws_cloudfront as cloudfront, aws_cloudfront_origins as origins } from 'aws-cdk-lib';

new cloudfront.Distribution(this, 'Dist', {
  defaultBehavior: {
    origin: new origins.HttpOrigin('example.com'),
    viewerProtocolPolicy: cloudfront.ViewerProtocolPolicy.REDIRECT_TO_HTTPS,
  },
});

Intentional? Suppress this finding

Sometimes a flag is deliberate โ€” a genuinely public endpoint, say. You can dismiss cloudfront-https-only and the reason is kept in the report, not silently hidden.

In .cdk-insights.json:

{
  "ignoreRules": [
    { "id": "cloudfront-https-only", "reason": "Why this is intentional" }
  ]
}

Or inline in your CDK code:

Validations.of(scope).acknowledge({
  id: 'cdk-insights::cloudfront-https-only',
  reason: 'Why this is intentional',
});

Use the rule ID cloudfront-https-only shown above โ€” not the CDK-* ID from SARIF / GitHub code scanning. To dismiss every finding on one construct instead, use ignorePaths. Suppression docs โ†’
